I am an RMT, but I also practice other modalities. Will my insurance cover me for the other modalities?
There has been a great deal of discussion surrounding the use of activities that fall within the scope of practice for RMT's. Generally speaking if a technique has been taught within the curriculum of the massage course by a licensed school, the insurance coverage will extend to that technique. If a technique or modality falls within the scope of practice as outlined by the Regulatory Body, or Provincial Association, the insurance will automatically extend to include that technique or modality.
Complementary modalities such as cranial sacral, hot stone massage, reiki, reflexology, aromatherapy, etc. are practiced by many therapists who can integrate these practices into a treatment. Most insurance companies will extend coverage to include the use of these modalities, usually with proof of competency provided by the practitioner. There are some activities that generally fall outside the scope of practice, such as homeopathy, bach flower therapy, allergy testing, nutritional consulting. You may need to obtain additional insurance to cover these practices or be charged an additional premium to include them in your existing insurance.
If you have questions regarding your coverage, you should always consult with your insurance broker or agent. Your insurance broker is a licensed professional who will be able to answer your questions and provide the documentation needed to put your mind at ease.
