I am a massage therapist and I also practice acupuncture. If acupuncture falls within the scope of practice of the governing body, why do I pay an additional premium to include acupuncture with my insurance?
Some insurance companies are prepared to offer coverage for massage therapists who also perform acupuncture. It is of importance to the insurance company that this treatment is considered to be within the scope of practice of most governing bodies. However, there are potential risks associated with this practice. Unlike massage, acupuncture needles break the skin and can cause infection or injuries to major vessels and nerves. Because of this increased risk, the insurance company will often require an additional premium to offset the greater risk that a client may sue a therapist due to injury or infection. You should check with your insurance provider to determine if an additional premium will be charged to cover your practice in acupuncture.
It is also advisable to obtain a document, which clearly indicates that you have coverage for acupuncture, and outlines any special requirements. We would also like to caution you that some insurance policies may exclude claims resulting from blood disease that is associated with acupuncture treatments and some policies may also have certain requirements, eg. The use of disposable needles.
If you have questions about coverage for acupuncture or any other questions relating to your insurance policy, you should always consult with your insurance broker or agent. Your insurance broker is a licensed professional who will be able to answer questions and provide documentation needed to put your mind at ease.
